Weaving the Carpet
Cappadocia is a famous carpet-making center of Turkey.  Women make rugs of silk and wool in the
double "Gordian" knot tradition.  Occasionally, we saw men weaving. Each strand of wool or silk is
placed by hand in a double knot.  Even small rugs take months to make.  Large rugs may take years
of daily work.  Some silk rugs have one million knots per square meter (39.77 inches square).
Workers are shown here in a factory in Avanos, which is the largest factory in Turkey.
