Danny & Bobby Find Oldest Surviving Wooden Water Wheel in America
The site of 1792 Beavers' Mill on Sandy Creek of Dan River. In the background is the old Beavers'
Mill Road bridge. We found the mill artifacts in the creek banks.
sixteen-foot-wide water wheel that has just been excavated (2004). The picture
shows the ripples of the water as it flows over the 12 in. x 12 in. wooden sill that is
preserved by the fresh flowing water. Our son, Bobby Ricketts of Forest, Virginia,
was a driving force in the excavation. He has prepared a website that fully
documents the discovery, excavation, and display of the water wheel and artifacts:
